Have you heard the news? The local government in Maumee has recently implemented an emergency ordinance to address sewer issues. Homeowners must now prove their sewer connections are compliant before selling their homes. This measure targets homes directing sump pumps and other “gray water” into the sanitary sewers, a concern flagged by the EPA and OEPA, who are imposing fines on cities that fail to manage sewer overflow.

This ordinance also makes local title agents liable if they help sellers bypass this rule. Consequently, if you own a home in Maumee, ensure your sewer inspection is completed before closing.

A significant challenge is the potential for inspection bottlenecks. The City of Maumee’s sanitary department is understaffed and they are required to approve private sewer contractors before inspections, leading to possible delays and financial setbacks. From my experience, the inspection process can be slow, so addressing any deficiencies early is crucial.

I’ve also heard concerning reports of high repair costs, ranging from $17,000 to $50,000. While the Maumee government means well, imposing a substantial sewer tax could provoke backlash from homeowners. I hope they expedite the approval of new sewer contractors to handle the increased demand.
